Participants will learn how to establish trust, set clear goals, and create a safe space for mutual learning and accountability. The course delves into effective communication techniques, cultural competency, and the importance of mentorship in developing leadership, academic achievement, and personal resilience—especially within youth and underserved communities. Attention is also given to mentor preparation, boundary setting, ethical considerations, and long-term engagement strategies that promote meaningful connection and measurable outcomes.

Foundations of African American (Black) History

This foundational course offers a comprehensive exploration of African American history, tracing the journey of strong and resilient people from ancient African civilizations to the present day. It is designed to illuminate the depth, resilience, and contributions of African Americans through critical eras of struggle, achievement, and transformation.

Beginning with the rich heritage of ancient African kingdoms such as Nubia, Mali, and Kemet (Egypt), students will examine Africa’s global significance prior to the transatlantic slave trade. The course then moves through the devastating impact of slavery and the fight for emancipation, highlighting the leadership and resistance of enslaved Africans and abolitionists.

Scholars will engage with primary sources, critical texts, oral histories, and multimedia resources to better understand the systemic forces that shaped African American experiences, as well as the enduring legacy of creativity, advocacy, and leadership within our communities.

Great American Story is a compelling exploration of the pivotal events, people, and movements that have shaped the United States, with a central focus on the African American experience as a driving force in the nation’s development. This course challenges conventional narratives by illuminating the contributions, struggles, and triumphs of African Americans.

Scholars will journey through America’s defining moments—its founding ideals, its contradictions, and its ongoing quest to live up to the promise of liberty and justice for all. Along the way, they will encounter the voices of visionaries and changemakers who have fought for freedom and reshaped the nation's conscience, including freedom fighters, artists, educators, and community leaders.

By re-centering the African American narrative within the broader sweep of U.S. history, Great American Story empowers scholars to critically examine the past, understand the present, and envision a future where African Americans thrive.
